Forest quiet and blue smooth surface of water and infrequent popples of waves calm. After such rest any family drama, monotone work and its difficulty are not frighten. Especially at the river or lake one forgets about fuss of life, its short duration. Meanwhile fishing is good also because it unites members of family, provokes sport heat and, above all, costs little. Just such fishing, resulting and absorbing, one can order in Karelia… certainly, in the tourist firms. However those, who prefers relying on themselves in rest, can reach for this krai on their own. The main thing is to have the map of the region on hand. Here fishing is very enduring. It is connected with comparatively long solstice. By the way, many newcomers prefer fishing with self-made rod. “One obtains great satisfaction from this, sense trophy stronger”, - they say. However others come here with spinning rod, they are lucky to fish well.

However those who prefer fishing from the boat – it is the most preferable way of fishing in whole Karelia. But in the central and northern areas of the krai there is a group of rivers and rapids, where one can fish salmon, umber and white-fish. By the way, salmon is a trophy of so called extreme fishing, as the special skills are necessary to catch it. Even professionals can’t boast that they catch salmon from the first – too nimble and strong this fish is. In this connection, in West Europe and England fishing salmon considers to be the highest fish sport.
As a rule, people fish it in the Onega by spinning. The firms offer specially equipped fourseater cutter with experienced instructor, who will not only tell, but show, how to fish this Karelian predator. In conclusion we can say that now in Karelia there are 47 species of fish. Some of them are found quite seldom, for example, starlet or eel. After erection the hydroelectric power station in the Svir river Atlantic sturgeon, which is fished only in the Ladoga, doesn’t drop in the Onega. The rare individuals of cat-fish gets in the Onega through the river Shuya and get acclimatized there. The rest 43 species of fish are spread everywhere and largo manum. However 12 of them, abounding, for example, in the Onega, can be singled out for the trophy fishing. This is kilez (Coregonus albula infraspecies kilez). In summer kilez holds to the depth of about 40 meters, where the water temperature doesn’t exceed +7. The weight is about 1 kg. Kilez is one of the insufficiently known fish. Special fishing it is not carried out. Lake salmon (Salmo salar morpha sebago Gazard) – is the closest relative of Atlantic salmon, for reproduction it gets to the rivers with rapids. Onega salmon weighs 4-5 kg, and the largest specimen – 16 kg (in Shalsky bay) and 13,6 kg (Brusno Island). Onega salmon is found in many areas of the lake, its accumulation can be met in Petrozavodsk bay (within the precincts of the town), before entering in the Shuya river. During spawning salmon has the length of the body 800-900 mm and the weight 5,5-7,5 kg.
Lake trout (Salmo trutta morpha Lacustris L.) –is a lake-river fish. Its fattening occurs in the lake and for spawning it gets to numerous rivers and brooks, flowing into Onega lake. The average weight – is about 4.6 kg with the length about 814 mm. Seldom one can fish the individuals with the weight 6-8 kg (the Shuya).
Iridescent trout (Salmo irideus Gibbons). Motherland of this fish is the Pacific coast of North America. In Karelia iridescent trout has been bred since 1963. The water of the Onega is ideal for artificial breeding trout in the nurse-ponds. Burbot (Lota lota L.) is the only representative of cod species in the lake. Lake burbot dwells in the depth of about 70 m, but it seldom exceed the weight 1.5 kg. Lake-river burbot is bigger than lake one. The record trophy specimen is burbots of the Vodla river (Shalsky), where the individuals with the weight about 25 kg were fished more than once. Lake char (Salvelinus Lepechini Gm.) – is the unique salmon species, constantly dwelling in the lake in the depth of about 40 m in cold layers of water (+4 even in summer). It spawns in the shallow sections only when the lake gets cold. It occurs, as a rule, in October. In the Onega there are two species of lake char: red (luda) and grey (pit). The maximum registered weight of this fish – 5.1 kg with the length 740 mm. Lake char is considered to be large in number, but hard-obtained fish of the lake.
White-fish (Coregonus lavaretus L.). The fish has the great number of forms and herds, typical for different areas of the lake. The famous Chelmuzhsky “white” fish with the weight 3 kg with the length 500 mm is considered to be the best trophy. Deep-water pit white-fish, which gathers in summer in the water layers with the temperature not higher than +6-8 (in the pits) is very interesting.
Umber (Thymallus thymallus L.). Meat of umber yields to white-fish in its gustatory quality. Though fishing it is considered to be more sports and interesting. Lake umber reaches the weight 2.8 kg with the length 50 cm.
Pike (Esox lucius L.). In the Onega there are two species of pike: lakeside, little, with the weight 3-6 kg, feeding on roach, perch, and big, “deep”, feeding on whitefish, and having the weight about 17 kg.
Pike perch (Lucioperca Lucioperca L.). It is spread almost everywhere. But unlike the southern areas of the country, where the pike perches with the weight 20 kg and the length 130 cm were fished, the trophy specimens of the Onega seldom exceed 6 kg. The exception is only pike perch of Chelmuzhsky bay, formerly delivered for Moscow for Ivan the Terrible’s table. This variety includes individuals with the weight 8.5 kg.
Perch (Perca fluviatilis L.) – lake and river fish. It has two forms: little and coastal – the object of amateurish fishing – and ordinary perch, dwelling in the lake in the depths of about 30 m. The trophy specimens reaches the weight 2 kg.
