“Russia” – probably while mentioning this word 30 years ago many countries shudderd. And there are some reasons on it. In spite of the fact that after the fall of the USSR, the government has lost quite the large territories, it continues occupying the leading part among the others governments.
Now the borders of Russia stretch for 17 millions m² – it is 11.5% of the world territory. With the help of these data Russia predominates other governments, rising to the first place. In such a way Russia is still the great government in the east part of Europe and nothern Asia by its territory, population, economical potention. Russian multinational government formed at the end of the 15th century in Moscow headed by Russian popular.This city is the capital of Russia now. But in the middle of the 19th century the nothern centre of the government St.Petersburg occupied the leading political position. High cultural and administrative positions put it to the first place by status. Now St.Petersburg is the northern capital of Russia. 150 million people, 82% of which is the Russians, the rest - the representatives of more then 120 nationalities. Russia as a whole is a comparatively thinly populated country. By density of population it occupies the2nd place in the world after the USA. Now the density of population is 8.7 men for 1sq.km, which is 17 times as little than in the EU and almost 15 as little than in China.
Russia consists of 89 subjects of Russion Federation. These are 22 republics, 50 regions, 10 districts, 6 krais and 2 capitals. There are more than a thousand cities in Russia. The largest cities, with the population more than 1 million people, are Moscow (more than 9 million people), St.Petersburg (about 4.7 million), Nizhni Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Ekaterinburg, Samara, Omsk, Chelyabinsk, Kazan, Perm, Ufa, Rostov-na-Donu, Volgograd.
